Case Study

City & Essex

“We wanted to build foundational knowledge and awareness among our staff base so they can think more sustainably within their individual roles and make decisions based on what’s best for the environment. I feel we achieved this really well with Sustainability 101.”

Matt Penrose, Head of Sustainability, City & Essex

Overview

City & Essex are a family-owned and managed cleaning company, one that for 50 years has set the standard in terms of service and innovation while caring for our customer’s image and reputation. We operate primarily in and around central London, and pride ourselves on looking after our people, customers and environment.

Challenge

Among other drivers, the cleaning industry as a whole is often motivated by the client base for sustainability impact. At City & Essex, a challenge we face is understanding multiple other industries and their barriers, trying to figure out where we can make the most impact not only on the cleaning sector, but also within our wider network and reach.

We believe it is essential to adopt sustainable practices for both ourselves and our clients across various industries, such as property management, real estate, hospitality and retail. In order to do this we need to embed knowledge in our staff so they have more thought behind their decisions, making small every-day decisions in order to effect change.

This is a constantly evolving space but we felt that education was an essential step to establish baseline knowledge for our staff.

Solution

In the weeks leading up to Earth Day 2023, all of our admin staff and leadership teams completed the Sustainability 101 programme. The feedback was really positive, people found it very interesting, fun and engaging. We were really impressed with the customer service experience.

“I found the course more difficult than I thought it would be, but overall very good and with a lot of information that I think more people should be aware of.” – Elsa, Cleaning Manager
