Calor partners with Rewrite to inspire the changemakers of the future

“At the heart of every business is a local community. Our partnership with Rewrite Education allows us an invaluable opportunity to educate, inspire and empower young people in our community on important climate and sustainability issues which affect them. It’s their future in their hands, so we’re delighted to be able to play our part.”

Duncan Osborne, CEO, Calor Ireland

Overview

Calor has been part of the local community in rural Ireland for over 80 years. Seeking to make a real difference for the customers and communities they serve, Calor is moving towards making its operation sustainable, as well as contributing positively to the global climate change agenda. By 2037, the company’s centenary year, Calor’s ambition is that all of its energy products will be from renewable sources.

Challenge

Sustainability for Calor means a commitment to managing the social, environmental and economic effects of the business operations in a responsible manner. Local communities are at the heart of the business and through community engagement, corporate giving and employee volunteering initiatives, Calor wants to make a positive difference. Rewrite Education is committed to prioritising climate change and sustainability in schools and wish to inspire the changemakers of the future. With all the financial demands on schools, it’s not possible for every school to roll out the programme.

Solution

By understanding their carbon footprint and exploring climate solutions and innovations, teenagers are given the tools and inspiration to make positive changes and reimagine a brighter, greener future! Through their partnership with Rewrite Education, Calor is sponsoring the roll out of Rewrite to a wider audience around the country. Calor began their sponsorship of Transition Year students in 3 local community schools in Dublin in February 2023 and later that year rolled out the course to an additional 4 schools in Cork & Mayo bringing the current total to 7 schools and over 600 students committed to and taking part in the Rewrite programme.

What schools say about Rewrite

The engagement with schools has been really positive from the outset. The schools that have taken up the sponsored places, have relished the opportunity.

We had the TY Parents Evening last night and I spoke to the parents about the importance of putting effort into the programme and how it can also be part of the Gaisce President's Award. They were very happy and highlighted how it is a great opportunity for the students.” Sustainability Teacher, Salesian College, Kildare

“Rewrite perfectly complemented the climate and environmental modules and projects that the students were engaged in, providing a better understanding & grounding on the issues involved. They loved the accessibility and interactivity of the course which allowed them to decide when to proceed and at what pace. Rewrite was a very positive and engaging experience, one we hope to continue with future TY students.” Teacher, Drimnagh Castle, Dublin

This partnership promotes collaboration between schools, business and the local community. Making quality climate education available to young people through a corporate partnership allows for and nurtures local level collaborations on important environmental initiatives. In the process, it teaches young people the benefit of being informed on climate issues, helps them to feel inspired to make positive environmental changes and all fostered by support from their teachers, business & the local community.
